How to Become a Fly-fisherman The Easy Way

Starting a new hobby can be fun; it can also be intimidating. Fly-fishing is no exception. With so much information out there and so many different opinions on how it should be done. It can feel like you will never be able to learn, and walking into a fly shop for help can be nerve racking. Don’t worry we have all been there. I myself was there not that long ago. While I am far from an expert in fly-fishing. I have been able to from skunking everytrip; to steadily catching fish using these rescources and methods.

Break it Down

First and formost stop trying to learn everything all at once. Focus on what basic gear you will need and how to properly use it. Then learn about the flies and why we use them. By breaking it down you will be able to focus on building a solid foundation that will lead you to catching fish on a regular basis. The following resorces were crucial in my journey.

  • The Venture Fly Co. youtube channel and free masterclass.
  • Orvis youtube channel
  • Mahoneys Outfitters in Johnson City, TN
  • Maggie Valley Fly shop in Maggie Valley, NC

Using these four resources made becoming a fly-fisherman easy. I know that two of these are flyshops and may not be close to you. I listed them because while it can feel intimidating to walk in and ask for help I feel that having local resorces makes things alot easier. If you are able to visit them. These two shops come highly reccomended.

That being said Venture Fly Co. makes fly-fishing so simple I can’t believe I was ever intemidated by it! The best part about them all the masterclasses and ebooks they offer are free. The podcast they do is extremely useful as well, and both Alex and Durrant are accesable and happy to answer your questions. I also found the Orvis youtube channel to be helpful with casting and other technical skills. I know this dose not seem like alot of sources, but I find that having to many can cause confusion. You are of course welcome to use your own sources just remember not to have to many.

Hit the water!

There is no substitute for experiance. You can watch ever youtube video and read every book, but if your not getting out in the water as you learn your doing yourself a disservice. Get out every chance you can even if it is just for a little bit. Everytime I go out and fish I learn something new. By picking a specific skill or technique to work on before each outing I find that I tend to take more from each trip. By focusing in on one thing per trip you will notice your abilities begin to increase more rabidly, and sharper skills will ultimately lead to more fish.

Last but not least have fun and don’t give up; remember it is just fishing try not to take it to serious.
