What do you really need to start fly-fishing?

When it comes to the gear you need to flyfish. If you ask a dozen anglers you will get a dozen different answers. For me the answer is simple. Though it may not be a popular opinion, I believe the only gear that is absolutely essential is a flyrod, a reel loaded with fly line and backing, an assortment of flies, a leader, and tippet. Depending on the time of year waders may also be essential.
While those few items are what I believe is all you need to catch fish. There are several items that will assuredly make your day on the water more comfortable. The following list is not final and may change the more I learn and spend time on the water. This list is also in no particular order.
Here is the list of gear, that while not absolutely necessary, is tremendously useful.
- A vest, sling pack, waist pack, or backpack
- Polarized sunglasses
- Wading boots
- Flotant
- forceps
- Nippers or a knife
- Fly boxes for organizing your flies
- A leader wallet
- Split shot sinkers
- Indicators
- a net(preferably rubber)
As mentioned before this is not an all inclusive list just a few things that I currently utilize myself to make my day on the water more enjoyable. Depending on your style of fishing, where you are fishing, and your personal preferences your list will look different. I always keep an open mind and am willing to try new gear that can make my day more enjoyable or easier.
